Aesthetic dermatologyBotox
Botox injections are the most widely used aesthetic treatment in the world. They temporarily relax the muscles that cause expression lines, for a more rested and natural look.
What is Botox?
Botox (botulinum toxin) acts on the nervous system by blocking the nerve receptors that stimulate the muscles. This temporarily stops muscle activity at the treated site, and the superficial wrinkles of the skin gradually relax significantly.
Which areas can be treated?
The main use of Botox is to reduce facial expression lines. The most common areas are:
- the frown lines between the eyebrows
- the lines around the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
- the horizontal lines on the forehead
- the lines at the corners of the mouth
- the dimpled (“cobblestone”) skin on the chin
Botox is also approved for the treatment of excessive sweating (focal hyperhidrosis).
Who is it for?
For men and women who notice that the forehead and the area around the eyes look tired and that their expression lines have become more pronounced.
How is the treatment done?
The procedure is relatively painless and takes a few minutes. Small amounts of a diluted solution are injected into the target muscles so that they relax.
The result usually settles within 24–72 hours, although in rare cases it may take up to 14 days. The treatment is repeated every 4–6 months, depending on the clinical picture and the desired aesthetic result. After 3–4 treatments the interval often becomes longer, as the movements that caused the wrinkles are reduced.
Frequently asked questions
Are there side effects?
When administered by a doctor, Botox is considered a safe treatment. Side effects are rare and temporary: mild pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache, temporary drooping of the eyelid, numbness or temporary weakness of nearby muscles.
When should it not be done?
Treatment is postponed if there is an infection in the area (e.g. herpes, molluscum contagiosum) and during pregnancy. It is not given to patients with neurological conditions. We will discuss your medical history before every treatment.
How long does the result last?
Usually 4–6 months. After that, muscle activity returns to its pre-treatment state.
